There are a variety of ways that you can save images at the correct dimensions and size for displaying on web pages. This is my favoured way. My images are also profiled srgb, which is better for web viewing.
I will be assuming you are using Photoshop.
1. Edit the image so it’s just how you want it (except for sharpening, but that is a personal preference, i do sharpen mine before hand).
2. Save your work before resizing.
3. Resize the image using (menu bar)….image….image size, you should see screens like the these below.

4. Insert the desired pixel dimensions, in this case "height 800", leave the "constrain proportions" box ticked and select "bicubic sharper" for resampling. Click "OK".
5. It is at this stage you sharpen the image, and a typical amount (via Filters...Sharpen...Unsharp mask) is shown on the images below, the amounts are variable dependent upon the image.

6. Then save your image as 'save as', giving it another name, or add a letter or something, so that it does not over-ride your original save.

7. Then use the slider that pops up in this window to reduce the file to the size to fit web constraints. For here, if you are going to attach the image, must be a maximun of 150k. If I am saving for photobucket or my web, i usually save at around 250k.

8. hit okay, and close your image. You can use the save for web option, but it will strip your exif.
