Default The fashion Man

Hi guys

I had a call from my photo editor a few days ago asking me to contact a local “whacky” fashion designer who’s starting to make a bit of a name for himself and grab a few images to support a story that’s going into the next printed edition.

He has a small studio in the city and I was racking my tiny brain for ideas of how to capture this guy and reflect something of his personality. Then it struck me, use my 10.5mm fisheye, mount the flash on the hot shoe and move in to within 2 feet of him. The flash being so close cast all sorts of odd shadows but ended up quite nice and soft and by under exposing the background and then over exposing the flash I got the guy to pop out from what could have been a confusing background.

This is the first shoot I’ve done like this where the subject has been so flamboyant and confident and it made such a difference to the shoot. Normally its people who are so shy and self aware that they just stand like rabbits in headlights!

Hope you like the results and I would love to hear what people think about the use of a fisheye for a portrait lense.

They are good, easy to seriously distort the subject with this sort of technique but these are well controlled, last and first are the pick to me.

From your description of him, I think the images suite his style / personality. The last image is my favourite.

Thanks guys

Not sure which one will be in the magazine yet but I suspect it will be one like number 4 which is also my choice. Although I do like number 3 as a real fun shot.

I bumped into the guy again on Saturday at a music festival and he loved the images and has invited me along to do some more work for him! No money in it but I get to have a good time, I get some good portfolio shots in a new subject area and most importantly I make more contacts in an area that could turn into something interesting.

Thanks again
Debs

Hello there

What a great set Debbie. The fish eye effect has really worked well here.

Cheers Frank
